The Sun is the engine of our system. Without it, the planets would be dark, frozen rocks floating in the void. It isn’t “burning” like a fire on Earth; instead, it uses a process called nuclear fusion. Deep in its core, it crushes hydrogen atoms together so hard that they turn into helium, releasing a massive burst of energy.
For us stargazers, the Sun is also the only star we can see in detail. You might see “Sunspots” on its surface—these are slightly cooler areas that look like dark freckles. But remember: **Never look at the Sun directly with your eyes or a telescope without a professional solar filter.** It will cause permanent blindness in less than a second.
The Sun also releases a “Solar Wind”—a stream of particles that flies past the planets. When these particles hit Earth’s magnetic field, they create the beautiful Northern and Southern Lights (Auroras).
